OSRS Winter Summit 2026 Recap - Raids 4 Teased, Chicago Finals Confirmed & Why the Courts Just Made Your Gold 'Real'

By Yellow Hat Editorial ·

Jagex's OSRS Winter Summit on January 26, 2026 confirmed Raids 4, the Chicago DMM Finals, and a packed content year. The same week, a UK court ruled OSRS gold is legally real property under the Theft Act 1968.

Jagex packed January 26 with announcements, and the week that followed may be the most consequential seven days in OSRS's history - not just for the content pipeline, but for what a UK court decided about the nature of in-game currency.

THE WINTER SUMMIT The Fractured Archive is officially confirmed as OSRS's fourth raid - the first new one in four years. Located deep beneath Gielinor within an ancient vault used by the god Guthix to store his most treasured possessions, it takes a Theatre of Blood-styled approach: demibosses in sequence, no puzzle rooms, a final epic encounter at the end. Designed for 2-8 players, it will be soloable - but Jagex is emphatic that soloing will be "difficult."

Key mechanical details confirmed at the summit: - Eight bosses total, including the Guthixian Archive Guardian (first teased at RuneFest 2025) and Bork - Theatre of Blood format: demiboss gauntlet final encounter, no puzzle rooms - Practice mode launching in the weeks after release (keeping the day-one race competitive) - Full-team wipe on release; TOA-style system (infinite attempts, dwindling resources) rolls out weeks later - New Best-in-Slot rewards throughout - Access requires completing While Guthix Sleeps

THE DEADMAN: ALL STARS LIVE FINAL - CHICAGO The Deadman: All Stars Season 3 live finals will take place in Chicago - the first official RuneScape event held outside the UK in the franchise's history. Hosted by Solo Mission. Tickets go on sale February 21. Six creator-led teams of five will compete through a training week on a private Deadman world, with the finale staged live in front of a crowd in Chicago. It's a landmark moment for OSRS's global community.

THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY The summit also confirmed RuneFest 2026 - billed as the biggest RuneFest ever - will take place in Birmingham in the autumn as part of RuneScape's 25th anniversary celebrations. New merchandise was unveiled: an OSRS-themed keyboard and keycap set from StarForge, a hand-painted TzKal-Zuk figurine, and community wall art created in collaboration with artist BucketCultist.

THE LEGAL BOMBSHELL The most viral OSRS story of January wasn't from Jagex. A UK Court of Appeal ruled in R v Andrew Lakeman [2026] that Old School RuneScape gold pieces legally qualify as property under the Theft Act 1968. The case centres on a former Jagex employee who allegedly accessed 68 player accounts and transferred approximately 543,123 ($700,000) worth of OSRS gold - which was then sold for Bitcoin.

The original ruling had found the gold held no monetary value. The appellate court disagreed:

"Gold pieces in RuneScape fulfill these criteria. They are properly described as something which can be stolen as a matter of normal use of language."

The ruling is specific to theft law - it does not declare virtual items as property for inheritance, taxation, or civil disputes. But it establishes that virtual currency with demonstrable real-world value (Jagex used Bond exchange rates as the valuation method) can be stolen through unauthorised access. For a 25-year-old game with a multi-million-pound secondary economy, the legal precedent is significant.

THE FULL PICTURE - Raids 4: The Fractured Archive - 8 bosses, boss rush, requires While Guthix Sleeps, no puzzle rooms - DMM: All Stars Live Finals - Chicago, first OSRS event outside the UK (tickets from Feb 21) - 25th anniversary merch: keyboard/keycap set, TzKal-Zuk figurine, community wall art - RuneFest 2026: Birmingham, autumn - "biggest ever" - UK court: OSRS gold qualifies as real property under the Theft Act 1968 in the context of theft
