GTA 6's "physical" edition won't have a disc — it's a boxed download code

By Yellow Hat Editorial ·

Take-Two confirmed the retail box ships with a download code, not a disc. What that means for launch night and preloads.

If you're planning a midnight launch with a disc in hand — adjust the plan. Take-Two has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI's physical retail edition ships as a boxed download code rather than a disc, continuing the industry's slide toward all-digital distribution even for the biggest release ever made.

Practically, that means every copy of GTA VI is a download. On launch night, the players who are in Leonida first will be the ones who pre-loaded — not the ones in line at a store. Expect Rockstar to open preloads in the days before November 19, and expect the launch-night download to be enormous.

It's a small detail with a real implication for the launch economy: with no disc supply constraints, the day-one population is limited only by how many people bought it — and pre-orders are already at levels Take-Two calls unprecedented. The online world, whenever it opens, will be the most crowded launch economy in gaming history.

We'll flag the preload window on this feed the moment Rockstar announces it.
