What Is Wintertodt?
Wintertodt is a skilling boss located in the far north of Great Kourend on Zeah. Players cooperate to subdue it by lighting and feeding braziers with bruma kindling. It is the fastest Firemaking XP in OSRS and one of the most popular early-to-mid game activities because supply crates provide seeds, herbs, ores, and gems that benefit almost every skill on the account.
How to Get There
- 1Teleport to Kourend Woodland using a Xeric's Talisman (Woodcutting Guild option)
- 2Run north through the camp gates into the Wintertodt area
- 3Switch to World 309 - the most active Wintertodt world
Alternative: Fairy ring code CIS puts you very close to the Wintertodt Camp entrance.
What to Bring
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Tinderbox | Required to light braziers |
| Axe (any tier) | Chop bruma roots |
| Hammer | Repair broken braziers for bonus points |
| Food (8-12 pieces) | Sharks or better; Anglerfish at lower HP |
| Warm clothing | Reduces cold damage - wear any warm item |
| Optional | Rejuvenation/Stamina potions for long sessions |
Warm clothing items: Clue hunter outfit, Larupia fur, bruma torch, or any item with the warm gear tag.
How the Activity Works
- 1Chop bruma roots near the four braziers
- 2Fletch kindling from roots for extra XP per piece (optional but recommended)
- 3Feed kindling into a lit brazier
- 4Repair broken braziers with your hammer when they crack
- 5Heal pyromancers when they take damage - earns bonus points
- 6Maintain 500 points minimum to receive a supply crate at round end
Each round lasts approximately 7 minutes. You need 500 points minimum per round to receive a crate reward.
How to Maximise Points Per Round
- Stay at one brazier - keep it lit and fed continuously
- Fletch your kindling before feeding for extra points per action
- Repair braziers immediately when they break - a dead brazier costs the entire team progress
- Heal pyromancers whenever they take damage - each heal adds bonus points
World Hopping Strategy: Use the Wintertodt Scouter RuneLite plugin to hop between worlds at 70%+ completion. Skip the early slog and finish rounds quickly.
XP Rates by Firemaking Level
| Firemaking Level | XP per Hour |
|---|---|
| 50-70 | 100,000-150,000 |
| 70-90 | 180,000-220,000 |
| 90-99 (full pyromancer outfit) | 250,000-300,000 |
Time to 99 Firemaking from level 50: approximately 150-200 hours.
Supply Crate Rewards
Crate quality scales with your Firemaking level and points earned. Higher level = better crate contents.
| Category | Low FM Level | High FM Level |
|---|---|---|
| Herbs | Guam, Tarromin | Ranarr, Torstol |
| Seeds | Low-tier farming | Snapdragon, Torstol |
| Logs | Oak, Willow | Magic, Redwood |
| Ores | Coal, Iron | Rune ore |
| Gems | Sapphire, Emerald | Onyx (rare) |
For Ironmen, Wintertodt crates are one of the best early sources of herb seeds and farming supplies.
Pyromancer Outfit
| Piece | XP Bonus |
|---|---|
| Pyromancer Hat | +0.5% |
| Pyromancer Garb | +1.0% |
| Pyromancer Robe | +0.5% |
| Pyromancer Boots | +0.5% |
| Full Set | +2.5% Firemaking XP |
The full outfit typically takes 50-200 crates to complete (high variance). Don't grind for it specifically - collect pieces naturally while training Firemaking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wintertodt worth doing? Yes - almost universally. It's the fastest Firemaking XP, requires minimal GP, and passively generates herbs, seeds, and ores from supply crates. Near-mandatory for Ironmen.
Can I solo Wintertodt? Yes. The activity scales to player count. Solo on a low-population world is viable; world hopping with the Scouter plugin is the most efficient solo strategy.
Does Wintertodt give other skill XP? Yes - chopping bruma roots gives Woodcutting XP; fletching kindling gives Fletching XP. Both are small amounts but it's passive.
